Abstract
This study is qualitative that explores the life stories of gay men in Barlis, Cabanatuan City using an in-depth interview and thematic analysis in order to interpret their stories.
This study revealed that participants' feelings about their gender identity can be grouped into either negative or positive, with the majority of respondents soil feeling negative, Second, it revealed the participants' experiences of discrimination against their identity, which included direct discrimination and harassment, as well as stereotyping. Third, this study discovered that the participants' mental state is affected by their experiences, as well as their coping mechanisms, which may be classified as adaptive or maladaptive, with the majority of them using maladaptive ways. Finally, this study revealed the participants' expectations and relationships with their families and community, they may still struggle to be accepted by both, but they were recognized gradually. Then they reflect on why, although living in a contemporary society, they still face biases based on their identity.
Gay men in rural areas like Barlis that often overlooked with such issues of discrimination and stereotyping, as according to the findings of this study they have experiencing biases and prejudice towards their gender identity, thus, these experiences affect their mental state and their feelings towards their own selves. In this study it found that though they cope with the experiences they encountered, their coping mechanism may not be appropriate way to deal their experience, but this study also subjected that gay men in Barlis were much accepted by this present time that it was before and when it comes to family, acceptance have the exchange responsibility of being acknowledgeable before they get accepted.
