Abstract
This research paper answered the following: 1. How was homonationalism framed in the discussion of same sex civil union in the Philippines? 2. How was heteronormality framed in the discussion of same sex civil union in the Philippines? 3. How was homonormativity framed in the discussion of same sex civil union in the Philippines? 4. How did the concept of homonationalism, homonormativity and heteronormativity influence perception (for) and (against) the legislation of same sex civil union?
Guided by Queer Theory and Thematic Analysis, the researcher joined four Facebook pages such as UP Babaylan, UP Pride, Yes to Family No to Sogie Bill, and No to Same Sex Marriage in the Philippines with participants from the LGBTQ community, advocates, conservatives and religious groups, all of whom had different ideas about same-sex civil unions. Messages were locked evaluated and extracted to homonationalism, heteronormativity and homonoramtivity-related posts that shape talks about same-sex civil unions.
The study's findings indicate that homonormativity is shaped by the subthemes LGBT Movements, Enduring Struggles of Queer, Utilizing Homosexuals for Political gain, and Urgent Need for Legislation which serves as a network of solidarity with common goals of acknowledging and upholding LGBT affirmative measures. Consequently, heteronormativity is shaped by the subthemes Denial by Legislators, Ingrained Spiritual Conviction, Against Ancient Culture, and Oppositional Views on Legislative Measure which serves as the biggest barrier towards legalizing same sex union in the Philippines while homonormativity is formed by Celebrating Gender Identity, Institutional Recognition and Queer Celebrities which shows that LGBT group are not yet fully accepted in the society in terms of legislative rights which makes same sex union remains unacceptable.
