Abstract
Pycnoporus sanguineus, an edible mushroom but not palatable, is a filamentous fungus with dark red circular pores that belong to Family Polyporaceae. this study evaluated the mycelial growth response as influenced by different incubation periods and elucidated the functional activities of P. sanguineus. Culture incubated for 25 days significantly produced the heaviest fresh (6.08g) and dry (0.51g) weight of mycelia. This sample mycelia contains triterpenes, flavonoids, tannins, phenols, steroids, alkaloids, anthraquinones, anthrones and fatty acids. Extract of mycelia after 25 days recorded the highest radical scavenging activity of 37.25% and total phenolic content of 86.29 mg GAE/g sample was recorded on 20th day mycelia. However, all mycelial extracts showed inhibitory activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. In terms of cytotoxic effect, the extracts of mycelia after 15, 20 ad 25 days showed the LC50 value of 90.448 ug/ml, 33.448 ug/ml and 16.024 ug/ml, respectively, which indicate highly toxic effect.
