Abstract
This thesis was conducted to take consideration of the social issues faced by the gay characters in the selected gay short stories in Ladlad Anthology. It was expound to: first, find the emerging social issues in selected gay short stories in Ladlad Anthology; second, discuss how social issues shaped gay characters' performance; and, lastly, analyze how these social issues affected the overall meaning of the literacy pieces. This study delimited its focus on the emerging social issues in Ladlad Anthology edited by J. Neil C. Garcia and Danton Remoto with theories such as Thematic Analysis (TA) and Gender Performativity by Judith Butler. With 38 short stories in Ladlad Anthology, the literary pieces were trimmed out into 20, using purposive sampling, the emerging social issues were same-sex issues like marriage and parenting, homophobic society, gender identify and HIV/AIDS awareness. The social issues like extortion, theft, violence, shifting economy, and gender identify pushed and shaped the gay characters' performances; as there are gays who perform as an asserted gay and there are unveiling gay who performs silently at first and became an asserted gay at the end of story. In addition, the social issues affected the overall meaning of the story. As those social issues became the conflict and changes in the development of the characters.
