Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the relationship of independent variables and the level of library utilization among extension education students of school year 1988-1989 in Central Luzon State University, Munoz, Nueva Ecija, Philippines. The variables studied were personal characteristics, library-related factors and library communication utilization. A complex enumeration of respondents was used. Data were gathered by the researcher with the help of one trained enumerator through an interview schedule supplemented by other relevant information obtained from the Central Luzon state university Library. Percentages, frquency, counts, ranks, means and standard deviation were used in the descriptive portion of the study. Chi-square test was used to determine the relatinship of variables. Findings revealed that majority of the respondents were female and their mean age was 19.25. Majority had "low" experience in library availment. They spent an average of 3.58 hours / week for studying their lessons. Most of them received small book allowance from home or an average of P158.56/semester. Only allowance for books and other reference materials had a highly significant relationship to the number of books/reference materials borrowed. All other personal characteristics were not related to library utilization. Library-related factors like attitude of staff towards library users and availability of books/reference materials had highly significant relationship to the number of books/reference materials borrowed from the library. Aforesaid factors did not show any relationship to number of hours spent in the library. Some problems of the respondents regarding library utilization were: inadequate books and other references materials; poor ventilation facilities, and negative attitude of the library staff.
