Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been studied to cause antibacterial effect that can be due to their ultrafine size which can cross bacterial membrane, and ability to react with the third groups in enzymes vital to bacterial growth. This study focused on synthesizing antibacterial AgNPs using Ageratum Ageratum conyzoides L. leaf extract to possibly provide better solution on restricting bacterial growth. AgNPs were synthesized by the reaction of A. conyzoides L. leaf extract and 0.001 M silver nitrate. the optimum temperature, pH and reaction time were also determined. Synthesized AgNPs under optimum condition were characterized morphologically using scanning electron microscopy, and were tested for their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The synthesi of AgNPs was favored by the reaction of 20 mL. of extract with 5 mL. 0.001 M AgNO3 at 55°C, pH 9, for 40 minutesof constant stirring Synthesized AgNPs were found to be mostly spherical with an approximate diameter of 237.13 ± 76.69 nm. The median inhibitory concentration (IC50) of AgNPs was found to be 2.55% viv against E. coli. and 0.98% v/v against S. aureus. AgNPs synthesized using A. conyzoides L. leaf extract have been found to possess an antibacterial activity that can possibly be developed to generate solution into the surfacing treats due to the drug-resistant bacterial strains.
