The study was conducted under an orchard-based cropping system in a 7-year cashew plantation. It had the following objectives: a) to compare the performance of the two mungbean varieties, i.e. Patig and Taiwan Green under orchard-based condition; b) to evaluate the agronomic and yield characteristics of these mungbean varieties as affected by soil moisture content; c) to determine the performance of mungbean at different planting distances under orchard-based condition; and d) to find out the interaction effects of soil moisture content and planting distance of two varieties of mungbean planted under orchard-based condition. Treatments evaluated significantly influenced the days to flowering and maturity, plant height at maturity, number of seeds per pod, weight of 1000 seeds, root length, grain yield per hectare. Grain yield of Taiwan Green variety planted at 25 cm between rows was comparable with Patig variety planted at 25 cm and 50 cm between rows. Maintaining the soil moisture at 41-60% outyielded the two levels of moisture, 10-25 and 26-40%. Patig variety was found superior over the Taiwan Green in terms f days to flowering and maturity, plant height, number of seeds per pod, root length, grain yield. In general, Patig performed better than Taiwan Green under orchard-based condition irrespective of planting distance and soil moisture content. Soil moisture content significantly influenced the plant height at maturity. Plants with closer irrigation frequency (41-60% soil MC) were taller than the plants growth at 10-25% MC and 26-40% MC. The same trend was observed in terms of the number of seeds per pod, weight of 1000 seeds, root length and grain yield.
