| dc.description.abstract | The study was conducted to provide a taxonomic catalog that focuses on the species of freshwater fishes found in the province of Science City of Munoz, and San Jose City. A total of ten (10) species belonging to seven families were found in the fresh waters, public markets, and aquacultural zones of these cities. The families having the most number of species were the Clariidae, and Osphronemidae with two species. This is followed by Cichlidae, Terapontidae, Cyprinidae, which are represented by only one species each. It was determined by the researcher that all fish species under study can be harvested all year round. Moreover, the spawning time of the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is at 3 to 4 months regardless if in captivity or not. On the other hand, the striped snakehead (Channa striata), North African and bighead catfishes (Clarias gariepinus and Clarias macrocephalus, respectively), and common carp (Cyprinus carpio) require induced spawning when in captivity. In the aquacultural zones of Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), thee pituitary glands of male catfishes are dilutes and injected into female catfishes to induce spawning. | |
