Abstract
This study was conducted to design a cylindrical-type paddy dryer, fabricated batch type rice dryer using commercially available materials, evaluate the performance of the paddy dryer in terms of machine capacity, drying efficiency and perform a cost analysis of the dryer. The rice dryer has a dimension of 1200 mm diameter and 1700 mm height. The machine consisted of drying chamber, outer cylindrical body, chimney, combustion chamber and fan powered by a 1hp electric motor to blow the heated air towards the drying bin. It operates to remove excess moisture present in the grains. The machine was tested and evaluated using NSIC Rc12 variety of rice found in San Andres, Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija. Performance parameters such as machine capacity, machine efficiency, temperature and drying time were evaluated. The machine has the capacity to dry 3 cavans. The dryer was able to dry the paddy from initial moisture content of 23.2% to 14.7%, 23.3% to 14.8% and 19.5% to 14.2% respectively after 6 hrs of drying operation.
