| dc.description.abstract | The study aimed to describe and assess how cooperatives promote utilization of common service facilities among the members in rice production management in Nueva Ecija, province. The study covered four agri-based cooperatives from four districts in Nueva Ecija namely: Bagong Buhay ng Mabini Multipurpose Cooperative, Aglipay Producers Cooperative, Talabutab Norte Primary Multi-Purpose Cooperative, and Tupad Pangarap Primary Multi Purpose Cooperative. Fifteen percent of farmer members were chosen form each cooperative to be respondents of the study, using proportional sampling procedure. Total respondents of 189 cooperative members were interviewed using survey method. A total of 20 BODs and cooperative management team participated in the on site focus group discussion. Primary data were gathered through personal interviews and focus group. discussion using guide questions. Secondary data were gathered through office visits and review of cooperative office's reports and other relevant documents. The four cooperatives managed and operated a total of 42 units of farm machines known as common service facilities (CSF) which were composed of hand tractor, 4 wheel tractor big, 4 wheel tractor small, drum seeder, mechanical transplanter, combine harvester, rice thresher, flatbed dryer, and recirculation dryer. Most of the CSF of cooperatives were obtained from the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) and Department of Agriculture (DA) through grant with 10-20 percent equity payment by the cooperatives. Cooperative lends CSF to the farmer members on the first come serve basis following the CSF policies. Out of 1265, a total of 541 members were serviced by CSF in four cooperatives as of 2015. Also cooperatives provided loans for crop production, providential, capital share, farming equipment, emergency and income generating projects. Two third of members availed loans from cooperative for crop production. The most effective strategy to promote CSF services was the general assemby meeting where majority of cooperative members were present. For non-members, word of mouth or personal contact with copperative members was the most effective promotional strategy. The mechanical transplanter was difficult to promote due to the perceived high cost of rental payment. Even though CSF could not cater to all farmer members, respondents were satisfied at the usage of CSF. Based on the test of relationship, sex, marital status, educational attainment, number of year cooperative, membership in other organizationa, amount of loan, farm size, number of machines and vehicles owned by respondents were related to the number of machine usage and number of hectared covered. Number of years in cooperative was negatively associated with satisfaction and adequacy of axtent of utilization. Number of hectares covered were positively and significantly related to rice yield and income. | |
