| dc.description.abstract | This study tells the stories of elderly Filipinos who are living alone. Specifically, this describes the characteristics of elderly Filipinos living alone, ADLK, IADL, feelings associated with living alone, common health concerns, health maintenance practices, and social support. This investigation followed a qualitative approach with a narrative research design. This study was conducted at Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija, Philippines, Purposive sampling technique was used to select key informants. Snowball or referral sampling method was used to identify OPs living alone. An in-depth interview was used to tell the stories of OPs living alone. To analyze the gathered data, a thematic analysis was employed. The study found that the elderly Filipinos, living alone in Cabanatuan City are living in poverty. the most common reason for living alone is bereavement and children moving out. Respondents are functionally independent in all ADL and IADL except telephoning and paying bills. Their feelings associated with living alone are dynamic with potential significance depending on being chosen or circumstantially imposed. Their feelings are also characterized by heterogeneity involving attitudes towards being alone, relationship with children and other kin, God and friends/neighbors. Seniors living alone represent a more vulnerable group due to fall-related and age-related forgetfulness accidents. OPs living alone maintain their health through mindful diet and exercise. OPs living alone receive both social support and social assistance. | |
